Post-Diwali clean-up and cracker debris notice for societies

The morning after Lakshmi Puja, most societies wake up to the same sight: burnt cracker shells in the parking and podium, used diyas on ledges, packaging and sweet boxes overflowing the bins, and wilting flowers and rangoli in the lobbies. Housekeeping staff can clear a lot, but they are often working short-handed during the festival, and some of the waste needs care. A clean-up plan, made before the festival rather than after, and a short notice to residents, gets the society back to normal quickly.

Plan the clean-up before Diwali

Talk to housekeeping early. Agree which mornings they will do the extra clean-up, which areas come first (the cracker area, parking, entrance and lobbies), and whether you need extra hands or extra bags and gloves. If some staff will be on leave, plan around it.

Ask the waste collector. Find out whether your municipal or private waste collector is running on the usual schedule over the festival days, and whether they have any instructions for festival waste. If collection will be missed for a day, residents should know so they hold their waste instead of piling it at the bins.

Set up the cracker area for clean-up. If your society uses a designated area, keep a bucket of water there and ask volunteers to soak spent crackers before they go in a bag. Cracker remains can stay hot or contain unburnt powder, so they should not be swept straight into dry waste or bins with paper.

What to ask residents

Common-area decorations

Fix a removal date for society lights and decorations, and tell whoever installed them, whether volunteers or a decorator. Lights left up for weeks waste power and get damaged; decorations taken down in a hurry by untrained hands can damage wiring. Store reusable items labelled, so next year starts with an inventory instead of a shopping trip.

Thank the people who did it

Housekeeping and security staff carry most of the festival's extra work. A thank-you line in the clean-up notice, naming the team, costs nothing and matters. If the society or residents are giving a festival gift to staff, that is usually handled separately, but the acknowledgement belongs here too.
