Diwali rangoli competition notice for your society

A rangoli competition costs little: some prizes, a few judges and a clear patch of floor for each entry. What goes wrong is rarely the rangoli itself. It is space allocation, entries that spill into the walkway, colours left on the floor for days, and a judging result nobody understands.

Decide these before you announce it

Categories. Most societies run two or three: kids (up to 12), teens and adults, and sometimes a family or wing team entry. Separate categories stop parents from quietly doing the kids' rangoli.

Space and size. Mark a numbered box for each entry, for example 4 ft x 4 ft, in the lobby, podium or clubhouse. Keep fire exits, lift fronts and stairways clear. Allot boxes by draw, not first come.

Materials and time. Say what is allowed (dry colours, flowers, diyas unlit during judging) and give a fixed window, such as 4 pm to 6:30 pm, with judging at 7 pm.

Judging. Two or three judges who don't live in the competing families, a simple score sheet (design, neatness, colour, theme, each out of 10), and results announced the same evening.

Clean-up. State when rangolis will be swept (for example two days after Diwali) and who does it, so the housekeeping staff aren't left guessing.

Checklist for the committee

Planning aid, not legal advice. This guide is a planning aid for society committees, not legal advice. Rules on firecrackers, noise, fire safety and use of common areas are set by courts, state governments, police and municipal authorities, and by your own society's bye-laws. They change, sometimes every year. Always check the current official order for your city before you post a notice.
