Diwali safety notice for apartment residents
A Diwali safety notice is different from the fireworks timing notice. It covers the whole festival period inside the building: diyas and candles, lights, crackers, guests, children, senior residents and pets, and what to do if something goes wrong. Its job is to make sure every household knows the basics and where to find help quickly.
Fire safety at home and in common areas
Most festival fires start small: a diya near a curtain, a lamp knocked over, an overloaded extension board, a rocket that lands on a balcony. Remind residents to keep flames away from fabric and paper, not to leave lamps burning in empty rooms, to keep balcony doors and windows closed when crackers are being burst nearby, and to clear dry items such as cartons and old furniture from balconies.
For the committee: check that fire extinguishers on each floor are in place and within their service date, that the fire alarm and hydrant system have been inspected as your building requires, that staircases and fire exits are clear, and that security staff know where the main power and gas shut-offs are.
Crackers
Point residents to the separate fireworks notice for the permitted time window, which should come from this year's official order for your city, and the society's designated area. Safety basics: burst crackers only in the designated open area, keep a bucket of water and sand nearby, light from arm's length, never relight a dud, and wear cotton clothes rather than loose synthetics.
Children, seniors, patients and pets
Children should handle crackers only with an adult present. Senior citizens, people with breathing problems or heart conditions, and households with newborns may want to keep windows shut during the busiest hours; the notice can ask neighbours for consideration. Pets are often frightened by noise: suggest owners keep them indoors with a quiet space, and ask residents not to burst crackers near pets or stray animals in the premises.
Security during the festival
Many families travel or have guests over Diwali. Ask residents to inform security if the flat will be empty, to register visitors at the gate as usual, and to be careful with deliveries. Security staff should know the designated cracker area and who to call for help.
Emergency details
The most useful part of any safety notice is the contact list. Include the national emergency number 112, fire (101), ambulance (108 in many states), the society security desk, the facility manager and the nearest hospital, and check every number before posting. Ask residents to save them.
